As of December 2006, I have started a project compiling outdated, low budget video footage produced predominately for educational purposes. Most clips would with out a doubt be deemed ‘bad” by virtually any viewer. I am simply collecting these clips, not altering them in any way, aside from significantly cropping them. As multimedia becomes less tangible yet more accessible due to an ever growing internet, it also becomes highly ephemeral. Any videos, films, sound recordings or other media that becomes innocently ignored or purposely eschewed for its lack of contemporary relevance is literally history that is falling through the cracks of time before our own eyes. My collection of videos is like a dam; holding back a sampling of media that will eventually meet its end. In many cases, the samplings of footage are arbitrary, in that they have no common theme that ties them together situationally. What makes these videos less socially relevant today? Does it all stem from their non-present time? What seems to be the noticeable deteriorating concepts or methodology? These questions have no clear answers, but are important in finding out who we are today and where we were, not so long ago.
